Former President Donald Trump is hesitant to agree to a debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, citing uncertainty over whether she will be the Democratic nominee.

A statement from the Trump campaign on Thursday evening indicated that there is considerable ambiguity within the Democratic Party about Harris’s nomination.

Harris emerged as the frontrunner earlier this week after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed her as his successor. She quickly secured enough delegate pledges to secure the nomination ahead of next month's Democratic National Convention.

Former President Donald Trump had previously committed to three debates with President Joe Biden.

The first debate, held in late June, showcased a lackluster performance from Biden, raising doubts about his ability to keep Trump from returning to the White House. Biden withdrew from the race on July 21.

Trump’s campaign suggested that former President Barack Obama was skeptical about Harris’s candidacy, as he had not yet endorsed her. 

That endorsement was made on Friday.

Is Kamala Harris the Democratic nominee?

Although Vice President Kamala Harris has secured delegate pledges and party endorsements, she will not be officially confirmed as the Democratic nominee until the party convenes at the Democratic National Convention for her nomination.

The DNC is scheduled for August 19-22.

Additionally, Harris has yet to announce her vice presidential pick.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly are among the names being considered as potential running mates for a Harris-led ticket.

Governor Shapiro, in particular, has attracted attention for his strong appeal in the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania.

Harris has expressed her readiness and enthusiasm for debating Trump.

The next debate is tentatively scheduled for September 10, with a possible third debate likely occurring in October.
